CAN YOU FORGIVE SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T APOLOGIZE?

Forgiveness is often more about personal peace than the other person’s remorse. Holding on to resentment can damage your mental and emotional health, while forgiving—regardless of the offender’s actions—can free you from bitterness. It doesn't mean you condone their behaviour or must reconcile; it simply means you choose to let go for your own well-being.

Forgiveness is not contingent on the other person’s repentance—it’s a command rooted in God’s grace. Jesus forgave from the cross, saying, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34), even though no one asked for it. In Matthew 6:14–15, Jesus teaches that our forgiveness of others is essential, just as God forgives us. Forgiving doesn't excuse wrongdoing or eliminate consequences, but it frees the forgiver from bitterness (Ephesians 4:31–32). While reconciliation requires mutual repentance, forgiveness can be one-sided and is an act of obedience and love, mirroring God’s heart.
